It’s a book about books, my favourite kind, so it’s no surprise I loved it, but I was impressed with how engaging the story was for me as an adult – my kids will no doubt love it as soon as they are old enough to read it too. Pages & Co.: Tilly and the Bookwanderers by Anna James is the first in the Pages & Co series that was recommended to me by my boss, a fellow booklover at Calgary Reads. Although I don’t plan on making this a habit, I just adored this book so much I couldn’t help but shout about it from the rooftops, or in this case, from the screen. In the 8 years I’ve been writing ivereadthis (yes, it has been that long!), I believe this is my first review of a middle grade work of fiction, which is books written for 8-12 year olds. The wealth of wisdom has accumulated through her non-fiction work manifests powerfully in Magpie, which is constructed upon thoughtful, clear-sighted examinations of the difficult themes of infertility and mental health. But we can’t forget what’s come before and Day lets it hang over the novel’s final moments like a creeping shadow. At first, it feels like a deflation: a grand opera culminating in a needle scratch. Loose ends are tied and problematic characters exiled. Day opts for a third act that is more grounded, even conciliatory. The dilemma with such novels, however, is that once you’ve raised the pitch that high, once all bets are off and narrators have shown their inevitable unreliability, how do you bring it home in a satisfying way?. And the spiraling energy at the center of the novel captures the way fertility struggles can serve as a tripwire, upturning everything else in one’s life. The near-constant fever pitch of the narrative matches how it feels to be suffering through pregnancy anxiety, fears of romantic betrayal, in-law strife, body horror. It’s not about how things are but how they feel - and the deeper truths that can be mined within that feeling. We watch Marisa, Jake and Kate make choices that strain credibility or at least consistency of character. And it’s the kind of twist that makes you re-evaluate everything you’ve read before. Early in Magpie, a twist comes that made me gasp out loud. The secret is a mindset that can be expressed in plain English: Harness your individuality in the pursuit of fulfillment to achieve excellence. This mold-breaking approach doesn't depend on you SAT scores, who you know, or how much money you have. Yet what is so remarkable is that hidden inside their seemingly one-of-a-kind journeys are practical principles for achieving success that work for anyone, no matter who you are or what you hope to achieve. Dark horses blaze their own trail to a life of happiness and prosperity. In the Dark Horse Project at the Harvard Graduate School of Education, bestselling author and acclaimed thought leader Todd Rose and neuroscientist Ogi Ogas studied women and men who achieved impressive success even though nobody saw them coming. As much as we might dislike the standard formula, it seems like there's no other practical path to financial security and a fulfilling life. This "standard formula" works for some people but leaves most of us feeling disengaged and frustrated. For generations, we've been stuck with a cookie-cutter mold for success that requires us to be the same as everyone else, only better. And just when things were getting interesting with Mimi, BAM! Part three: Deming.Īnyway, Schuyler and Jack have gained the protection of the European Coven, but it was revealed at the end of the last book that the Countess was Lucifer’s first wife in another cycle. My only complaint was that each section – except for the Deming section – was too short! Just when things were getting interesting with Schuyler and Jack, BAM! Part two: Mimi Force. I liked the switch because you finally got to groove with the characters and didn’t have to worry at the end of the chapter of switching to a different narrator. The problem was sort of resolved in this book with the novel being divided into four parts – Schuyler, Mimi, a Venator named Deming, and a sort of epilogue dealing with the three narrators. The biggest issue that I’ve had with this series was the fact that you had 3 different narrators and that they would change every chapter – or two depending on how series the events were in the last chapter.
